LenSx Laser Treatment for Cataracts with our Chico Ophthalmologists
Cataracts are a common eye problem that occurs most often in older adults. When certain changes occur in the lens of the eye, usually age-related, the proteins change structure and the normally-clear lens becomes cloudy. This often occurs gradually, causing decreased visual acuity and other problems as the condition progresses. At Reeve-Woods Eye Center, our ophthalmologists in Chico recommend treatment for more severe cataracts with one of the latest methods of laser treatment, the LenSx Laser System.
Symptoms of Cataracts
Cataract symptoms usually come on slowly and include:
- Blurred vision
- Hazy vision
- Increased sensitivity to glare
- Trouble seeing at night
- Changes in color perception
Most people who develop cataracts develop them in both eyes, but not all. People who do have them in both eyes often have one eye that is worse than the other.
Causes of Cataracts
Most cataracts are related to aging. However, there is some evidence that additional risk factors for cataracts include smoking, excessive drinking, and lack of antioxidants in your diet. Diseases such as diabetes and glaucoma also increase your risk of developing cataracts, as do some medications.
Diagnosis and Treatment
An eye doctor can diagnose cataracts during a routine eye care visit, or you can make an appointment if you are concerned about your vision. Mild cataracts may not produce noticeable symptoms, and those that produce minor symptoms can sometimes be temporarily treated with a new prescription. However, in the long term, most cataracts will need to be removed. This is done using surgery to remove the lens and replace it with an artificial one.
The LenSx Laser System
Traditionally, cataract surgery is done using a physical blade. The surgeon makes a small incision in the eye and removes the clouded lens before replacing it. The LenSx laser system is a femtosecond laser, specially designed to make extremely precise cuts guided by both a computer and your eye care professional. It replaces the need for a traditional blade.
How the LenSx Laser System Works
The LenSx Laser System uses high-resolution imaging to provide the best information about where to make the incision. The surgeon uses this information to choose where to make the laser incision. Because the laser does not put as much pressure on the eye as a physical blade, it causes reduced distortion of the eye during the procedure. After the clouded lens is removed, our team of eye physician professionals will implant an artificial lens to replace the old one.
