XEN Gel Stent Treatment for Glaucoma from our Chico Ophthalmologists
Glaucoma is a degenerative eye disease, often asymptomatic in its early stages. It is characterized by fluid pressure in the eye that causes damage to the optic nerve and eventually may cause vision loss. Fortunately, there are effective treatment options for glaucoma, including the XEN Gel Stent, offered Reeve-Woods Eye Center. Our Chico ophthalmologists recommend the XEN Gel Stent for glaucoma patients where previous surgery or medications have been insufficient.
Symptoms of Glaucoma
The most commonly diagnosed type of glaucoma is primary open-angle (POA) glaucoma, accounting for 90% of glaucoma cases. POA glaucoma presents only one symptom as it slowly progresses--a gradual reduction of peripheral vision resulting in permanent tunnel vision if the disease continues without treatment.
Diagnosis and Treatment of Glaucoma
Most people do not know they have glaucoma until they receive one or more tests designed to detect glaucoma, such as a tonometry, ophthalmoscopy and/or perimetry test. People at a higher risk for glaucoma include older people, those who have a family history of glaucoma, individuals suffering high blood pressure and adults who are nearsighted.
While glaucoma isn't curable and vision loss due to glaucoma cannot be reversed, eye doctors can reduce intraocular pressure with prostaglandin eye drops to improve fluid flow and reduce pressure. Beta blockers may also help decrease the production of eye fluid to lower pressure. If medications fail to regular intraocular pressure, your eye doctor may recommend laser surgery to improve the drainage system (trabecular meshwork) in the eye.
XEN Gel Stent for Glaucoma
The Xen Gel Stent is a new, minimally invasive alternative to drainage surgery for glaucoma. The XEN Gel Stent is a flexible, permanent implant designed to shunt fluid from the eye's anterior chamber to beneath the conjunctiva of the eye. Gel stents are about six millimeters in length and no wider than a human hair.
Your eye doctor uses a preloaded, disposable injector to implant a gel stent through a tiny, corneal incision that quickly seals itself. Because the stent is made of non-inflammatory, collagen-derived gelatin, it conforms naturally to eye tissue, which helps minimize problems associated with other synthetic stents. Other glaucoma stents have been known to migrate, erode and cause corneal endothelial damage. Recovery time following implantation of the XEN Gel Stent is much shorter and come with fewer side effects than glaucoma laser surgery or other shunt surgeries for glaucoma.
