Cataracts are a common vision issue, especially as we age. If you’ve been told you need cataract surgery, you might already know that the clouded natural lens of your eye will be replaced with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL). But not all IOLs are created equal. At Reeve Woods Eye Center, we’re proud to offer an advanced option that allows for a higher level of customization: the Light Adjustable Lens (LAL).
The Light Adjustable Lens is the first and only intraocular lens that can be fine-tuned after surgery using UV light treatments. While traditional IOLs are chosen before surgery and their power cannot be altered once implanted, the LAL allows your eye doctor to adjust your vision postoperatively based on your healing and personal preferences. This technology provides a unique opportunity: you can “test drive” your vision before finalizing it.
After your cataract surgery, you’ll wear UV-blocking glasses to protect the lens until your adjustments are complete. Over the following weeks, your eye doctor will use a specialized Light Delivery Device (LDD) to non-invasively adjust the lens based on your vision needs. Once you're satisfied with your vision, a final light treatment is applied to lock in your customized prescription.
Personalized Vision: Unlike fixed-power lenses, the LAL allows for adjustments after your eyes have healed, providing optimal vision tailored to your lifestyle.
Reduced Dependence on Glasses: Many patients experience improved distance, intermediate, or near vision with less need for corrective eyewear.
Greater Precision: Post-surgical adjustments allow for higher visual accuracy compared to standard IOLs.
The Light Adjustable Lens is a great option for many cataract patients, especially those who:
Want more control over their visual outcome
Have had refractive surgery like LASIK in the past
Prefer to reduce or eliminate the need for glasses
Your eye doctor will evaluate your eye health, lifestyle, and goals to determine if the LAL is a good fit for you.
Our team is dedicated to helping you achieve the best possible outcome from cataract surgery. If you're considering cataract surgery and want to learn more about the Light Adjustable Lens, we’re here to guide you every step of the way.
