At Reeve Woods Eye Center we believe your vision should be as unique as you are. We are proud to offer the Light Adjustable Lens™, the first and only intraocular lens that allows your vision to be customized after cataract surgery. This revolutionary technology gives patients the rare opportunity to preview and fine-tune their vision in the weeks following surgery, helping deliver sharper, more personalized results than ever before.
The Light Adjustable Lens™ by RxSight is an innovative intraocular lens (IOL) implanted during cataract surgery that can be adjusted postoperatively to refine and enhance visual outcomes. It is the first and only FDA-approved lens of its kind that uses ultraviolet (UV) light to fine-tune vision after your eyes have healed.
Traditional IOLs require surgeons to select a fixed prescription before surgery, often relying on calculations that may not perfectly predict postoperative outcomes. With the LAL™, patients have the unique opportunity to preview and adjust their vision before finalizing the prescription.
The process of achieving optimal vision with the Light Adjustable Lens involves several steps:
Lens Implantation: During cataract surgery, the Light Adjustable Lens is implanted just like any other monofocal IOL.
Initial Healing: Over the following 2 to 3 weeks, the eye heals and stabilizes. During this time, patients wear special UV-blocking glasses to protect the lens from unintended exposure.
Light Adjustment Sessions: Using a specialized Light Delivery Device (LDD), controlled UV light is applied in-office to change the shape and prescription of the lens. Each session is painless and takes only about 90 seconds. Patients undergo between 1 and 3 light adjustment sessions spaced a minimum of 5 days apart.
Lock-In Treatment: Once the patient is satisfied with their visual clarity, a final series of lock-in treatments are performed to permanently set the lens' prescription.
The LAL™ offers a number of significant advantages that distinguish it from traditional IOLs:
Postoperative Customization: Vision is adjusted after the eye has healed, allowing for a level of personalization not possible with standard IOLs.
Superior Accuracy: Clinical studies have shown that over 92% of patients achieved 20/25 vision or better without glasses six months after surgery. This is a significant improvement over standard monofocal lenses.
Greater Freedom from Glasses: Patients are twice as likely to achieve 20/20 vision without the need for corrective eyewear compared to those who received standard IOLs.
Ideal for Patients with Prior Refractive Surgery: For patients who have had LASIK, PRK, or RK, the LAL offers a more reliable method for achieving sharp vision than traditional lenses, which can be less predictable in these cases.
Customizable Vision Goals: Whether patients want better distance vision, near vision, or a blend of both (monovision), the lens can be tailored to support their lifestyle.
The Light Adjustable Lens may be ideal for patients who:
Are undergoing cataract surgery and want to reduce dependence on glasses afterward
Have preexisting astigmatism (≥ 0.75 D)
Have a healthy macula and retina
Have had prior refractive surgery and are seeking the most accurate outcome
Are committed to wearing UV-protective glasses and attending follow-up appointments
Because the LAL requires additional appointments and follow-up care compared to standard IOLs, patients must be comfortable with this extended process to ensure the best result.
The Light Adjustable Lens is a major advancement in cataract surgery technology, offering unmatched precision, customization, and visual freedom. At Reeve Woods Eye Center, we are excited to bring this state-of-the-art solution to our patients who want more than just standard vision correction.
